Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Austin Hudson (born February 6, 1897 – died November 29, 1956) was an important British politician. He was a member of the Conservative Party, one of the main political groups in the United Kingdom. He also held the special title of a Baronet, which is an inherited honor given by the King or Queen.

What is an MP?

Sir Austin was a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is a person elected by the public to represent them in the Parliament, which is where laws are made for the country. Think of it like a school council, but for the whole country!

Representing the People

Sir Austin first became an MP in 1922 for an area called Islington East. He lost that election in 1923 but was elected again in 1924 for Hackney North. He kept this seat for a long time, until 1945. After a short break, he was elected again in 1950 for a new area called Lewisham North.

Working in Government

Besides being an MP, Sir Austin also had important jobs within the government. These jobs are often called "offices."

Helping the Government Run

  • From 1931 to 1935, he was a Lord of the Treasury. This meant he was a government whip, helping to make sure all the MPs from his party voted together on important issues.
  • From 1935 to 1939, he was a Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport. He helped the Minister in charge of things like roads, railways, and other ways people travel.
  • From 1939 to 1940, and again during Winston Churchill's government in World War II, he was the Civil Lord of the Admiralty. This role involved helping to manage the Royal Navy, Britain's powerful sea force.
  • In 1945, he briefly worked as a Parliamentary Secretary for the Minister of Fuel and Power. This ministry looked after the country's energy supplies.

A Special Title

In July 1942, Sir Austin was given the title of a baronet. This is a special honor that means he was known as "Sir Austin Hudson, 1st Baronet." The title can be passed down in his family.
