Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Charles Barrington, 5th Baronet (born around 1671 – died January 29, 1715), was an important English politician. He was a member of the Tory political party. The Tories were one of the main political groups in England during his time.

Early Life and Education

Charles Barrington was the second son of Thomas Barrington and Lady Anne Rich. His mother was the daughter of Robert Rich, who was the 3rd Earl of Warwick. Charles's father, Thomas, was the first son of Sir John Barrington, 3rd Baronet. However, Thomas passed away before his own father, Sir John.

Charles went to school at Felsted School. This was an important step in his education. In 1691, Charles became a baronet after his older brother, John, died. John was only 21 years old when he passed away from smallpox, a serious illness at the time. A baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.

Political Career and Public Service

Sir Charles Barrington began his political journey in 1694. He joined the English House of Commons, which is like the main part of the British Parliament where laws are made. He represented the area of Essex in Parliament. He served there until 1705.

Later, he represented Essex again in the Parliament of Great Britain. This was from 1713 until he died two years later. In 1702, Sir Charles was given an important job as Vice-Admiral of Essex. This role involved overseeing naval matters in the county. He held this position from 1705, and then again from 1712 for another two years.

Sir Charles was also a "freeman" of Maldon, Essex. This meant he had special rights in the town. He also served as an "alderman" and "bailiff" for Maldon. These were important local government roles, helping to manage the town's affairs.

Family Life and Passing

Sir Charles Barrington was married twice. His first marriage was to Bridget Monson on April 20, 1693. They were married at St Bride's Church in London. Bridget was the daughter of Sir John Monson, 2nd Baronet. Sadly, Bridget passed away in 1699.

Sir Charles then married again on May 23, 1700. His second wife was Hon. Anna Marie FitzWilliam. She was the daughter of William FitzWilliam, who was the 1st Earl FitzWilliam.

Sir Charles Barrington did not have any children. When he died, his title as baronet went to his cousin, John Shales. As part of receiving the inheritance, John Shales changed his last name to Barrington. Sir Charles Barrington was buried in Hatfield Broad Oak in Essex.
