His Early Life and Education
Sir Charles Dalrymple was born Charles Fergusson. His father was Sir Charles Dalrymple Fergusson, 5th Baronet. His older brother was Sir James Fergusson, 6th Baronet. When his father passed away in 1849, Charles changed his last name to Dalrymple. This was done to follow the wishes of his great-grandfather, David Dalrymple, Lord Hailes.
Charles went to Harrow School, a famous school. After that, he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, a well-known university. He then became a lawyer in 1865.
His Public Roles
Sir Charles held several important roles. He was a Justice of the Peace (JP) for East Lothian, Midlothian, and Ayrshire. A Justice of the Peace is a person who helps keep law and order in their local area. He was also a Deputy Lieutenant for East Lothian. This is a special role that helps the Lord-Lieutenant, who represents the King or Queen in a county.
He was also a captain in a military group called the Prince Regent's Ayr and Wigtown Militia. His family home was at Newhailes in Musselburgh.
His Time in Politics
Sir Charles Dalrymple became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1868. An MP is a person elected to represent an area in the UK Parliament. He first represented an area called Buteshire. He held this seat until 1885, with a short break. Later, he represented Ipswich from 1886 until 1906.
In 1887, he was given the title of baronet. This is a special hereditary title, like a knight, but it can be passed down in the family. In 1905, he became a member of the Privy Council. This is a group of important advisors to the King or Queen.
From 1894 to 1896, he was the Grand Master of the Freemasons in Scotland. This is a high leadership position in a well-known social organization.
Sir Charles Dalrymple passed away on 20 June 1916, when he was 76 years old. He is buried in the churchyard at Inveresk.
His Family Life
Sir Charles Dalrymple was married to Alice Mary Hunter Blair. She was the daughter of Sir Edward Hunter Blair, 4th Baronet. They had three children together:
- Christian Elizabeth Louisa (born 1875 – died 1932)
- David Charles Herbert (born 1879 – died 1932)
- Alice Mary (born 1884 – died 1959)
Their son, David Charles Herbert Dalrymple, became the 2nd Baronet after his father passed away. He inherited the family estates.
