Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Edward Greville (born around 1566 – died 1634) was an important English nobleman from Milcote, Warwickshire. He also served as a Member of Parliament, which means he was a representative for his area in the English government.

Sir Edward Greville's Early Life

Edward Greville was the second son of Ludovic Greville and Thomasina Petre. His mother, Thomasina, was the daughter of Sir William Petre, a well-known figure from Ingatestone Hall in Essex. Edward became the head of his family and inherited their lands in Gloucestershire and Warwickshire after his father's death and his older brother's passing.

A Career in Politics

Sir Edward Greville was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Warwickshire two times. He served in the Parliaments of 1593 and again in 1604. This was an important role, as he helped make decisions for the country.

In 1594, he was also selected as the High Sheriff of Warwickshire. This was a key local position, responsible for law and order in the county.

Special Missions and Duties

In August 1594, Sir Edward traveled with the Earl of Sussex to Stirling Castle in Scotland. They were there for special ceremonies and masques (which were like plays or performances) during the christening of Prince Henry of Scotland.

He also volunteered for a naval journey called the Azores expedition in 1597. In the same year, he became a commissioner. This meant he helped find goods belonging to people called recusants, who refused to follow the official church. He held this job for at least two years.

By November 1597, he had been knighted, which gave him the title "Sir." He also served as a Justice of the Peace for both Warwickshire and Gloucestershire from about 1592 to at least 1608. A Justice of the Peace helped keep the peace and dealt with local legal matters.

In 1606, he helped investigate lands owned by people involved in the Gunpowder Plot in Warwickshire. This was a famous event where a group tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament. By 1625, he had become a Gentleman of the Privy Chamber, a special role serving the King.

Family and Later Years

Sir Edward Greville married Joan Bromley in 1583. Joan was the daughter of Sir Thomas Bromley. They had one son and five daughters. One of their daughters, Mary, later married Arthur Ingram. Joan passed away in 1636.
