Early Life of Sir Edward Musgrave

Sir Edward Musgrave was born in 1621 at Hayton Castle in Cumberland, England. His parents were Dr. William Musgrave and Lady Catherine Sherbourne.

He later married Mary Graham. Her father was Sir Richard Graham, 1st Baronet. Sir Edward and Mary had four children together: Jane, Francis, Richard, and William.

When his father, Sir William, passed away, Sir Edward became the head of the family. He inherited the title and all the family lands, including Hayton Castle.

Sir Edward and the English Civil War

Sir Edward Musgrave was a strong supporter of the King during the English Civil War. This war was fought between those who supported King Charles I (called Royalists or Cavaliers) and those who supported Parliament (called Parliamentarians). Sir Edward was a loyal Royalist, also known as a Cavalier.

He spent a lot of his own money and time helping the King. He even paid for his own group of soldiers on horseback, called a regiment, to fight in the war.

In 1648, Sir Edward served as a Colonel in the army. He fought bravely in a big battle known as the Battle of Preston.

Later, in 1651, a very important event happened at the Battle of Worcester. King Charles II's horse was shot from under him. Sir Edward quickly got off his own horse and gave it to the King. This brave act allowed King Charles II to escape safely.

After the King's side lost the war, Sir Edward had to hide. He found safety in Scotland with the Duke of Gordon. However, the Parliament's leader, Oliver Cromwell, found out where he was. Cromwell told the Duke that he would send soldiers to attack his castle if Sir Edward was not handed over. Luckily, Sir Edward managed to escape again. He fled to the Isle of Man to stay safe.

Sir Edward Musgrave passed away on 22 November 1673 at Hayton Castle. After his death, his eldest son, Sir Richard Musgrave, inherited his title.
