Sir Edward Stradling, 2nd Baronet (born 1600 – died 20 June 1644) was an important English businessman and politician. He fought for the King's side, called the Royalists, during the English Civil War. He was part of the Battle of Edgehill, where he was captured. He was held as a prisoner for seven months. After being set free in May 1644, he went to Oxford. Sadly, he died there from a fever the next month.

Who Was Sir Edward Stradling?

Edward Stradling was the oldest son of Sir John Stradling, 1st Baronet, and Elizabeth Gage. He was born in a place called St Donats, in Glamorgan, Wales. Records show he was baptised at St Donat's Church on 9 November 1600. Some other records say he was born in 1601.

Early Life and Family

Edward went to Brasenose College, Oxford for his education. When his father passed away in 1637, Edward became the next Baronet. A Baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.

Edward was very interested in business. He worked on projects involving London's water supply and the soap industry. He married a woman named Mary, who was the daughter of Sir Thomas Mansel. Edward and Mary had one child, a son also named Edward.

A Role in Politics

In 1640, Edward Stradling was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Glamorgan. This was during a time known as the Short Parliament. Being a Member of Parliament meant he helped make laws and decisions for the country.

Fighting in the English Civil War

In 1642, the First English Civil War began. This was a big fight between King Charles I and Parliament. Edward Stradling supported the King. He led troops from Glamorgan to join King Charles I's army in Shrewsbury.

The Battle of Edgehill

Edward was a colonel, which is a high-ranking officer, in a group of foot soldiers. They fought in the Battle of Edgehill. This was one of the first major battles of the war. During this battle, Edward was captured by the other side.

Capture and Later Life

Edward was held as a prisoner for seven months. He was finally released in May 1644. After his release, he traveled to Oxford. Sadly, he became very sick with a fever and died there. He was buried in the chapel at Jesus College, Oxford on 21 June 1644.
