Sir Henry Lyttelton, 2nd Baronet (born in 1624, died June 24, 1693), was an important English politician. He was part of the famous Lyttelton family. During the English Civil War, he was a Royalist officer, meaning he supported the King. After the King's power was brought back (this was called the Restoration), Sir Henry became a member of the House of Commons from 1678 to 1679.
Sir Henry Lyttelton's Life Story
Henry Lyttelton was the oldest son of Sir Thomas Lyttelton, 1st Baronet. He was born in 1624. When his father passed away in 1649, Henry inherited the family lands. These estates were located in places like Frankley, Halesowen, Hagley, and Upper Arley.
In 1651, Henry joined the Royalist army. They fought in the Battle of Worcester. The Royalist forces were defeated by the Parliamentarians. Because of this, Henry was held prisoner for 17 months. He was kept in the famous Tower of London.
Even after being imprisoned, he was given an important job. From 1654 to 1656, he served as the High Sheriff of Worcestershire. This role was like a chief law enforcement officer for the county.
Later, in 1678, he was chosen to be a member of parliament. He represented the area of Lichfield. He served in the House of Commons until 1679.
His Family and Legacy
Sir Henry Lyttelton was married two times. His first wife was Philadelphia. She was the daughter of Thomas Carey. Thomas Carey worked for King Charles I.
His second wife was Lady Elizabeth Newport. She was the daughter of Francis Newport, 1st Earl of Bradford. Sir Henry did not have any sons. Because of this, his brother became the next Baronet after him.
