Sir Thomas Lyttelton, 1st Baronet (1593 – 22 February 1650) was an important English politician and soldier. He lived a long time ago, from 1593 to 1650. He was part of the Lyttelton family and supported the King during the English Civil War.

Sir Thomas Lyttelton's Life

Thomas Lyttelton was born in 1593. He was the oldest son of Sir John Lyttelton. He inherited family lands in places like Frankley and Hagley. These lands had been taken away from his father. But King James I gave them back to his mother, Meriel.

Thomas went to Balliol College, Oxford, for his education. He also studied law. In 1618, he was given a special title: a baronet. This meant he was a knight with a hereditary title.

He was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Worcestershire. He served in Parliament several times between 1620 and 1640.

Role in the English Civil War

During the First English Civil War, Sir Thomas was a leader for the King. He was a Colonel in charge of soldiers from Worcestershire in 1642.

In 1644, he was captured by a soldier named Tinker Fox in Bewdley. Sir Thomas was then sent to the Tower of London as a prisoner. He also had to pay a large fine of £4,000.

Sir Thomas Lyttelton passed away in 1650. He was buried in Worcester Cathedral.

Sir Thomas Lyttelton's Family

Sir Thomas Lyttelton married Catherine. She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Crompton. They had many children together. They had twelve sons and four daughters. Sadly, some of their children died when they were young.

  • Henry (1624–1693) was a soldier who supported the King. He also became a Member of Parliament later.
  • Charles (1629–1716) also supported the King. He took over the baronet title after his older brother Henry.
  • Edward was killed in a duel.

  • William worked for the Queen of Bohemia.
  • Ferdinando (born c. 1639) worked for James, Duke of York. He also joined the French army and was killed in a battle.
  • George (died 1712) was a major in a military regiment.
  • Catherine (died 1691) never married.
