Sir Henry Martin (1733–1794) was an important naval officer. He became a Captain in the Royal Navy. His last big job was Comptroller of the Navy from 1790 to 1794. This role meant he helped manage the navy's ships and supplies.
Henry Martin was born on August 29, 1733, in a place called Shroton House in Dorset, England. His family was involved in owning plantations in the West Indies.

Henry Martin went to the Portsmouth naval academy to study. He also had private lessons. He became a captain in the Royal Navy. He served in the Seven Years' War in waters near America and the West Indies.
After the war ended in 1763, he lived in Ireland for a while. He returned to the Navy briefly in 1770. This was during a time when war seemed possible.
In 1780, Henry Martin was given a big job. He became the resident naval commissioner at Portsmouth. He held this important position for ten years. This meant he was in charge of naval operations and resources in that area.
In 1788, he also became a plantation owner in Antigua. In March 1790, he was chosen to be the Comptroller of the Navy. This was a very high-ranking job. Later that year, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Southampton. This meant he also helped make laws for the country.
In 1791, he was given the special title of a baronet. This made him Sir Henry Martin.
His Family Life
Henry Martin married Eliza Anne Gillman on November 26, 1761. She was a widow from Ireland. They had eight children together, four sons and four daughters.
His Son: Admiral Sir Thomas Byam Martin
One of his sons, Admiral Sir Thomas Byam Martin, also became very famous. He followed in his father's footsteps. He also became the Comptroller of the Navy later, from 1816 to 1831.
His Daughter: Sarah Catherine Martin
His daughter, Sarah Catherine (around 1768-1826), is known for something fun. She put together the famous nursery rhyme Old Mother Hubbard. She published it in 1805. The book was called The Comic Adventures of Old Mother Hubbard and her Dog.
Sir Henry Martin's Death
Sir Henry Martin passed away on August 1, 1794. He was almost 61 years old. He died at his home in London. People remembered him as a very good person. They said he was kind, a loving husband and father, and a loyal friend. He was respected by many.
