Sir James Laurence Cotter, 5th Baronet of Rockforest (1887–1924) was an important figure from Ireland. He was an officer in the army and held the title of Baronet. He also served as the High Sheriff of County Cork.

Sir James Laurence Cotter was born in 1887. His father was James Lombard Cotter. His grandfather was the third Baronet, Sir James Cotter.

He was the first son of his parents. This meant he would likely inherit the family title.

Becoming a Baronet

In 1902, Sir James Laurence Cotter became the 5th Baronet. He inherited this title from his grandfather, the fourth Baronet.

This was an important role in his family's history. It meant he was now the head of the Cotter Baronets of Rockforest.

Military Career and Public Service

Sir James Cotter had a career in the military. He was a captain in the Royal Artillery. This is a part of the army that uses large guns.

He also served as a Brig-Major. This was in the South of Ireland Imperial Yeomanry. In 1914, he took on another important job. He was appointed as the High Sheriff of County Cork.

Family Life

Sir James Cotter was married two times. His first wife was Ethel Lucy Wheeler. She was the daughter of Alfred Wheeler.

They had three children together. Their names were Violet Rosa Sonia Cotter, Sir Delaval Cotter, and Laurence Stopford Llewellyn Cotter. Sadly, Laurence was killed in action in Sicily in 1943. He was 30 years old.

Sir James Cotter's second wife was Griselda Winifred Wenyon. She was the daughter of Edwin James Wenyon.

Succession

When Sir James Cotter passed away in 1924, his title was passed on. His first son, Sir Delaval Cotter, became the next Baronet.

Sir Delaval Cotter became the 6th Baronet of Rockforest. This continued the family's long line of Baronets.
