Sir James Laurence Cotter, 4th Baronet of Rockforest (born 1828, died 1902) was an important person from Ireland. He was an Anglo-Irish officer, a Justice of the Peace, a High Sheriff, and a Baronet. These were all important jobs in his time.

His Early Life and Family

Sir James was the son of Sir James Cotter, the 3rd Baronet. His mother was Helena Tryndall Lombard. He was also the grandson of Sir James Cotter, the 2nd Baronet.

When his father passed away in 1834, James became the 4th Baronet. This title was passed down in his family. He went to college at Trinity College, Dublin, in Ireland.

Important Roles and Service

Sir James Cotter had several important roles during his life. He served in the British Army, specifically in the 27th Regiment. He was also part of Her Majesty's Body Guard. This meant he helped protect the Queen.

He was a captain in two different military groups: the South Cork Light Infantry and the Queen's Own Light Infantry. These were local military units.

Sir James was also a Justice of the Peace in County Cork. This role meant he helped keep law and order in the area. He was also a Deputy Lieutenant of the Tower Hamlets. In 1882, he became the High Sheriff of County Cork. This was a very important official position in the county.

His Family and Legacy

Sir James Cotter married twice. His first wife was Julia Emily Loinsworth. They had two sons: Sir Ludlow Cotter and James Lombard Cotter. Sir Ludlow Cotter passed away without having any children.

His other son, James Lombard Cotter, was a Lieutenant in the Gloucestershire Regiment. James Lombard Cotter had a son named James Laurence Cotter.

When Sir James, the 4th Baronet, passed away in 1902, his grandson, James Laurence Cotter, became the 5th Baronet. This is how the Baronet title continued in the family.
