Sir James Mor Macdonald: A Scottish Leader
Sir James Mor Macdonald was the oldest son of Sir Donald Gorme Og Macdonald. When his father passed away in 1643, James was about 38 years old. He then took over his father's important roles. He became the Chief of the Clan Macdonald of Sleat. A clan chief is the main leader of a large family group in Scotland.
Fighting for the King
Like his father, Sir James supported the King. He fought as a Royalist, which means he was on the side of King Charles II. The King was trying to claim the British throne. Sir James joined the King's cause in 1645. He was asked to join by a famous leader named James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose.
One of the most well-known battles Sir James fought in was the Battle of Worcester in 1651. This was a very important fight during the English Civil War.
Life After the War
The King's side lost the Battle of Worcester. The Parliamentarians, who were against the King, won. After the King had to escape, Sir James Macdonald made a deal with the government. This deal helped him and his friends stay safe.
After the war, Sir James went back to his family home. This was Duntulm Castle on the Isle of Skye. He decided to focus on helping his community instead of fighting more battles. He worked as the Sheriff of the Western Isles. This meant he was in charge of law and order in that area. He also helped to catch people who had committed crimes.
