Sir John Brookes, 1st Baronet (born in 1636 – died in 1691) was an important English politician. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Boroughbridge. He was also known as Sir John Brooke.

Early Life and Education

John Brookes was born in York, England, and was baptised on June 9, 1636. He was the only son of James Brookes, a successful merchant in York. His father even became the Lord Mayor of York in 1651, which is like being the main leader of the city.

John went to school in York. Later, he studied law at Gray's Inn in London. In 1652, he continued his education at Christ's College, Cambridge, a famous university.

A Member of the Royal Society

In 1662, Sir John Brookes was chosen to be an early member of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group of scientists and thinkers in the United Kingdom. Being a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) means you are recognized for your contributions to science. However, he was later removed from the society in 1685.

Political Career

Sir John Brookes held several important roles in his life. He became a Justice of the Peace (JP) for York. A Justice of the Peace is a local official who helps keep law and order. He later became a JP for the North Riding of Yorkshire too.

In 1676, he was given the special title of Baronet. This is a hereditary title, meaning it can be passed down in the family.

He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Boroughbridge in North Yorkshire. He served in Parliament twice, first in 1679 and again in 1681. He was part of a political group known as the Country Party. This group often pushed for changes in how the country was run.

Family and Death

Sir John Brookes passed away in 1691. He was buried at St Martin's church in Coney Street, York, the same church where he was baptised.

He was married to Mary. Her father was Sir Hardress Waller. Sir John and Mary had a large family with 4 sons and 7 daughters. After his death, his son James became the 2nd Baronet.
