Sir John Clerk of Pennycuik, the 5th Baronet, was an important figure in Scottish society. He was a Royal Navy officer and a founding member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Born in 1736, he lived during a time of great change and discovery.

Early Life and Family

John Clerk was born in 1736 in Edinburghshire, Scotland. His father was Sir George Clerk-Maxwell and his mother was Dorothea. The family was well-known and respected.

In 1784, when his father passed away, John inherited the title of Baronet. A Baronet is a special title of honor, like a knight, that can be passed down through the family. This made him Sir John Clerk, 5th Baronet.

Contributions to Scottish Societies

Sir John Clerk was very active in the intellectual life of Scotland. He was a member of the Philosophical Society of Edinburgh. This group brought together smart people to discuss new ideas in science and philosophy.

Because of his involvement, he became a founding member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1783. This was a very important new society for learning and research in Scotland.

In 1785, Sir John also became a Director of the Highland Society. This society worked to improve farming and life in the Scottish Highlands.

Later Life and Legacy

Sir John Clerk passed away on February 24, 1798. He was between 61 and 62 years old. He was buried with his wife, Rosemary Dacre Appleby, in the churchyard at Penicuik.

Sir John and Rosemary did not have any children. Because of this, his title as Baronet went to his nephew, George, after his death.

Artistic Recognition

Sir John Clerk and his wife, Lady Clerk, were the subjects of a famous painting. The portrait was created by the well-known artist Sir Henry Raeburn. Today, this important artwork is kept at the National Gallery of Ireland.
