Sir John Hoskyns (born July 23, 1634 – died September 12, 1705) was an important English gentleman. He held the title of the 2nd Baronet. This means he inherited a special title from his father.
He was one of the people who helped start the Royal Society. This is a famous group for scientists. He even led the Royal Society as its president from 1682 to 1683. Sir John also worked in politics. He was a Member of Parliament for Herefordshire from 1685 to 1687. This meant he helped make laws for England.

Sir John Hoskyns was born in Herefordshire, England. His birthday was July 23, 1634. He was the oldest son of Sir Bennet Hoskyns, who was the 1st Baronet.
His mother, Anne, taught him basic Latin. Later, he went to Westminster School. This was a very famous school in London. He learned a lot there.
Becoming a Lawyer and Politician
Sir John Hoskyns studied law. He became a lawyer at a place called the Middle Temple. He was known as a good lawyer. He even became a "master in chancery." This was a special judge in a court called the Court of Chancery.
In 1680, he became the 2nd Baronet. This happened after his father passed away. Five years later, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament. He represented his home area of Herefordshire. Even though he was an MP, he was not very active in politics.
Leading the Royal Society
In 1682, Sir John Hoskyns became the President of the Royal Society. He took over from his friend, Sir Christopher Wren. The Royal Society is a group that supports science and learning.
Sir John had many famous friends. These included John Evelyn and John Aubrey. He was elected to Parliament when King Charles II died. He stopped being president of the Royal Society in 1683. But he continued to help as a secretary from 1685 to 1687.
Sir John Hoskyns passed away on September 12, 1705. He was buried in Harewood, Herefordshire.
Sir John's Family Life
Sir John Hoskyns married a woman named Jane Low. She was the daughter of Sir Gabriel Low. They had a large family together.
Their two sons were Bennet and Hungerford. Bennet became the 3rd Baronet after his father. Hungerford later became the 4th Baronet. Jane, Sir John's wife, lived until 1724. She was also buried in the church at Harewood End.
