Sir John Lambert, 1st Baronet (1666 – 4 February 1723), was an important merchant from London. He was born in France but became a very successful businessman in England.

Who Was Sir John Lambert?

Sir John Lambert was a powerful merchant who lived a long time ago. He was known for his business skills and for helping the British government with money. Because of his success, he was given special titles like "Sir" and "Baronet."

Early Life and Family

John Lambert was born in 1666 in France. His father, Jean Lambert, was also a merchant from a place called Saint-Martin-de-Ré. John's mother was Marie Le Fevre.

His family were Protestants. Because of their beliefs, they moved to England. John went to school in England, in a town called Camberwell.

A Successful Merchant

After finishing school, John Lambert became a merchant, just like his father. He was very good at business and earned a lot of money through trade. He became one of the leaders, called "directors," of a big company known as the South Sea Company. This company was involved in trade and finance.

Helping the Government

Sir John Lambert was so successful and wealthy that he was able to help the British government. He lent them a huge amount of money, more than £400,000! This was a massive sum back then.

Because of his help, he was made a "Knight" in 1710. This meant he could use the title "Sir" before his name. Then, in 1711, a powerful government official named Robert Harley suggested that John Lambert should be given an even higher honor. He was made a baronet. A baronet is a special title that can be passed down in a family, similar to a knight but with a hereditary title.

The Lambert Family Legacy

Sir John Lambert married Madeleine Bruzelin around 1690. She was the daughter of another merchant from France. Their first son, also named John, was born in 1690.

Sir John Lambert, the 1st Baronet, passed away on February 4, 1723. His eldest son, John, then became the 2nd Baronet. His wife, Madeleine, lived until April 1737.

The 2nd Baronet, John, married Anne Holmes. Her father worked for the government's food supply office. The 2nd Baronet lived a long life and died at 82 years old in 1772. His eldest son, also named John, then became the 3rd Baronet in the Lambert baronets family line.
