Early Life and Public Service
John Peyton was the oldest son of Robert Peyton from Isleham. His mother was Elizabeth Rich. John Peyton took over his family's lands when his father passed away in 1590.
Becoming a Justice of the Peace
Around 1584, John Peyton became a Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for the Isle of Ely. A Justice of the Peace was an important local official who helped keep law and order. They would handle smaller legal cases and make sure local rules were followed. A few years later, around 1591, he also became a J.P. for Cambridgeshire.
Serving in Parliament
In 1593, John Peyton was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Cambridgeshire. An MP is someone elected to represent their local area in the House of Commons. They help make laws and discuss important issues for the country.
Other Important Roles
From 1593 to 1594, he held the position of High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire. A High Sheriff was a very important official in a county, responsible for law enforcement and carrying out court orders. In 1596, he became a Deputy Lieutenant, which meant he helped the main county leader with military and local government duties. On November 1, 1596, he was given the title of Sir when he was knighted.
He was elected as an MP for Cambridgeshire again in 1604. In 1611, he was given the special title of Baronet. A Baronet is a hereditary title, meaning it can be passed down in the family, and it's below a Baron but above a Knight.
Later Years
Sir John Peyton passed away at the age of 56. He was buried in Isleham on December 19, 1616.
Family Life
Sir John Peyton married Alice Osborne in 1580. Alice was the daughter of Sir Edward Osborne, who had been the Lord Mayor of London. Sir John and Alice had a large family with six sons and five daughters. After his death, his son Edward inherited his Baronet title. One of their daughters, Frances Peyton, later became the mother of Sir John Hobart, 3rd Baronet.
