Sir Edward Peyton (who passed away in April 1657) was an important English landowner and a politician. He served in the Parliament several times between 1621 and 1629. During the English Civil War, he supported the side known as the Parliamentarians.

Sir Edward Peyton's Life and Work

Edward Peyton was the oldest son of Sir John Peyton, 1st Baronet and his mother, Alice Osborne. His grandfather, Sir Edward Osborne, was once the Lord Mayor of London. Edward went to school in Bury.

He was made a knight at Whitehall in London on March 18, 1611. Later that year, on August 16, he joined Gray's Inn, which is a place where people train to become lawyers. When his father died in December 1616, Edward became the next Baronet and took over the family lands. He also owned land in Great Bradley, Suffolk. In 1618, he earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Cambridge.

In 1621, Edward Peyton was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Cambridgeshire. This meant he represented the area in the country's government. He also served as the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire from 1622 to 1623. He was re-elected as an MP for Cambridgeshire in 1625 and again in 1626.

Sir Edward Peyton played an active part in the English Civil War. He fought on the side of the Parliament, who were against the King. This war cost him so much money that he had to sell his family home in Isleham.

Peyton passed away in Wicken, Cambridgeshire. He was buried in London at St Clement Danes church.

His Family Life

Sir Edward Peyton was married three times. His first marriage was to Martha Livesey on April 24, 1604, in Streatham, Surrey. Martha passed away in 1613.

His second marriage was to Jane Thimblethorpe on June 6, 1614, in London. Jane was the widow of Sir Henry Thimblethorpe and the daughter of Sir James Calthorpe.

His third marriage was to Dorothy Minshaw on December 13, 1638, in Clerkenwell. After Sir Edward died, his widow Dorothy married Rev. Edward Lowe.

Sir Edward Peyton's son from his first marriage became the next Baronet after him.
