Sir Lionel Wright Vane-Fletcher (born June 28, 1723 – died June 27, 1786) was an important person in 18th-century England. He was the son of a successful businessman who worked in both London and Rotterdam. Lionel also owned a large estate in a place called Cumberland.
He became the very first Baronet of Hutton on June 27, 1786. A Baronet is a special title given by the King, which is passed down through the family. It's like being a knight, but the title stays in the family. Lionel became a Baronet because his cousin, Henry Vane, 2nd Earl of Darlington, asked King George III to grant him this honor. Lionel was also a friend of John Howard, who worked to make prisons better. Lionel's son, Frederick, later changed his family name to Fletcher-Vane in 1790.
Early Life and Family
Lionel Vane was born in Rotterdam on June 28, 1723. His father, Walter Vane, was a successful merchant. This means he bought and sold goods, often across different countries like England and the Netherlands. Walter Vane passed away in March 1755.
Lionel's mother was named Mercy. She was the daughter of Samuel Wright. Sadly, Mercy died shortly after Lionel was born, in July 1723.
Marriage and Children
In August 1758, Lionel Vane married Rachel Griffith. They were married at a church in London. Rachel was the daughter of David Griffith.
Lionel and Rachel had five children together. Their children were named Frederick, Walter, Henry, Catherine, and Rachel. Their son, Frederick, later became the next Baronet after Lionel.
Becoming a Baronet
