Sir Miles Sandys, 1st Baronet facts for kids
Sir Miles Sandys (born 1563, died 1645) was an important English landowner and politician. He was known as the 1st Baronet of Wilberton. He served in the House of Commons, which is a part of the English Parliament, at different times between 1614 and 1629.
Early Life and Education
Miles Sandys was the son of Edwin Sandys, who was the Archbishop of York. His mother was Cecily Wilford.
Miles went to Merchant Taylors' School in 1571. His older brothers, Samuel and Edwin, also went there. All three brothers later became Members of Parliament (MPs).
He then went to Peterhouse, Cambridge in 1578. He earned his first degree (Bachelor of Arts) in 1580. He completed his Master of Arts degree in 1583. He became a fellow (a kind of academic position) at Peterhouse in 1581. Later, he became a fellow at Queens' College in 1585. He also worked as a Proctor at Cambridge University from 1588 to 1589.
Political Career and Titles
In 1603, King James I knighted Miles Sandys and his brother Edwin. This happened on May 11, 1603, at the Charterhouse in London.
Sir Miles Sandys was given a special title called a baronet on November 25, 1611. He became the 1st Baronet of Wilberton in Cambridgeshire. From 1615 to 1616, he held the important local position of High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire.
Sir Miles Sandys was elected as a Member of Parliament several times.

- In 1621, he was elected as an MP for Huntingdon.
- In 1628, he became an MP for Cambridgeshire. He served until 1629.
In 1629, King Charles I decided to rule without Parliament. This meant that Parliament did not meet for eleven years. Sir Miles Sandys's political career in Parliament ended at this time.
When Sir Miles Sandys passed away in 1645, his oldest son, who was also named Sir Miles Sandys, took over his title.
Family Life
Sir Miles Sandys was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Cooke. They had seven sons and one daughter together. His second wife was Mary West. She was a widow when they married on November 28, 1626, in London.
