Sir Oswald Mosley, 2nd Baronet (born March 27, 1785 – died May 24, 1871) was an Anglo-Irish nobleman, a politician, a historian, and someone who studied nature (a naturalist). He held an important local position called High Sheriff of Staffordshire in 1814.

Mosley's Family Background

Oswald Mosley came from a wealthy family who owned a lot of land in Staffordshire, England, and County Monaghan, Ireland. His family's main home was Rolleston Hall, which was near Burton upon Trent.

His grandfather, Sir John Mosley, 1st Baronet, was given the special title of "Baronet" in 1781. A Baronet is a hereditary title, meaning it passes down through the family, similar to a knight but higher. When his grandfather passed away in 1798, Oswald Mosley became the 2nd Baronet.

His Work and Public Life

Sir Oswald Mosley was a Member of Parliament (MP) for several areas. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the country's parliament, where laws are made. He served as an MP for:

  • Portarlington from 1806 to 1807
  • Winchelsea from 1807 to 1812
  • Midhurst from 1817 to 1818
  • Staffordshire North from 1832 to 1837

Besides being an MP, he was also the High Sheriff of Staffordshire in 1814. This was an important role in the local government, responsible for law and order.

Sir Oswald Mosley also loved to write about history and nature. He wrote several books, including:

  • History of the Castle, Priory and Town of Tutbury (published in 1832)
  • Gleanings in Horticulture (published in 1851)
  • Natural History of Tutbury (published in 1863)

Marriage and Children

Sir Oswald Mosley married Sophia Annie Every on January 31, 1804. They had 13 children together.

Some of their children included:

  • Oswald Mosley (born 1804), who passed away before his father.
  • Sophia Anne Mosley (born 1806).
  • Emily Mosley (born 1808).
  • Frances Mosley (born 1810), who married James Heath Leigh.
  • Sir Tonman Mosley, 3rd Baronet, of Ancoats (born 1813), who became the 3rd Baronet after his father's death. He had three sons:
  • Mary Anne Mosley (born around 1816), who married Major William Fawkener Chetwynd.
  • Caroline Mosley (born 1818), who married Henry Master Feilden.
  • Octavia Mosley (born 1820), who married Edward Spooner.
