Sir Philip Musgrave (born May 21, 1607, died February 7, 1678) was an important English politician. He was also known as the 2nd Baronet. He served in the English Parliament for many years. During the Civil War, he was a soldier for the King, joining the side called the Royalists.
Early Life and Family
Philip Musgrave was born into an old and important family. His father was Sir Richard Musgrave, who was also a Member of Parliament (MP) for Westmorland. When his father passed away in 1615, Philip became the 2nd Baronet. This title meant he inherited a special honor passed down in his family. The Musgrave family had lived in Westmorland for a very long time.
Political Beginnings
In 1640, Philip Musgrave was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Westmorland. This first Parliament was called the Short Parliament. Later that same year, he was elected again for the Long Parliament. During these times, he strongly supported the King. Because of his support for the King, he was stopped from being a Member of Parliament in 1643.
Role in the Civil War
The 1640s were a time of great conflict in England, known as the Civil War. Sir Philip Musgrave was a brave soldier who fought for the King's side, known as the Royalists. He was made the Governor of Carlisle, an important city. He also fought in major battles, including the Battle of Marston Moor and the Battle of Worcester.
Later, in 1651, he was appointed the Governor of the Isle of Man. This appointment was made by Charlotte Stanley, Countess of Derby, who was a powerful leader on the island.
After the War
After the Civil War ended and the King's power was restored, Sir Philip Musgrave continued his political career. From 1660 until his death, he held an important position called Custos Rotulorum of Westmorland. In 1661, he was re-elected as a Member of Parliament for Westmorland. He served in this new Parliament, known as the Cavalier Parliament, until he passed away in 1678.
Sir Philip was even offered a special title, Baron Musgrave. However, he chose not to accept it.
Family Life
Sir Philip Musgrave married Julia Hutton. She was the daughter of Sir Richard Hutton from Goldsborough Hall in Yorkshire. When Sir Philip died at the age of 70, his son, Richard, became the 3rd Baronet.]
