Sir Richard Sutton, 4th Baronet (born October 21, 1821 – died October 3, 1878) was an English first-class cricketer. He was also an officer in the British Army. A "Baronet" is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.
Early Life and Family
Richard Sutton was born in October 1821 in a place called Sudbrooke, in Lincolnshire, England. His father was Sir Richard Sutton, 2nd Baronet, and his mother was Mary Elizabeth Burton.
A Career in the Army
In May 1839, Richard Sutton joined the British Army. He became an officer called an "ensign" in the 97th (The Earl of Ulster's) Regiment of Foot. This meant he bought his position as an officer.
Later, in July 1847, he bought a higher rank. He became a "lieutenant" in the 1st Regiment of Life Guards. This was another important step in his military career.
Cricket Adventures
Richard Sutton was also a talented cricketer. He played "first-class cricket" for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). The MCC is a very famous cricket club in England.
He played for the MCC in 1850 and 1851. During this time, he played three matches against Cambridge University. He also played one match against Oxford University.
In 1857, he played one more first-class cricket match. This time, he played for a team called the Gentlemen of Kent and Sussex. They played against the Gentlemen of England.
Later Life and Legacy
Richard Sutton got married twice. His first wife was Anna Houson, whom he married in 1845. Sadly, she passed away in 1846. He then married Harriet Anne Burton in 1851.
He also served as a "deputy lieutenant" for Nottinghamshire. This was an important local role, helping the main representative of the King or Queen.
In June 1873, his brother, Sir John Sutton, passed away. Richard then became the 4th Baronet, inheriting the family title.
Sir Richard Sutton died in October 1878 in Ryde, on the Isle of Wight. After his death, his son, also named Sir Richard Sutton, became the 5th Baronet.
