Sir Robert Napier, 2nd Baronet facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Robert Napier, 2nd Baronet (born around 1603 – died 7 March 1661) was an important English politician. He lived at Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire. He was known for being a member of parliament, which means he was part of the group of people who made laws for England.

Early Life and Family

Robert Napier was the oldest son of Sir Robert Napier, 1st Baronet. A "Baronet" is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family. Robert became a knight himself on 23 April 1623. Later, on 22 April 1637, he inherited his father's title and became the 2nd Baronet.

He went to Exeter College, Oxford for his education. He also studied law at Gray's Inn, which was a place where future lawyers learned their skills.

His Time in Parliament

Sir Robert Napier was a Member of Parliament (MP) for several areas. He represented Corfe Castle in the Parliament that met from 1625 to 1626. After that, he was an MP for Weymouth from 1628 to 1629.

Later, he represented Peterborough in a very important Parliament known as the Long Parliament. This Parliament lasted for many years. However, Sir Robert was later removed from Parliament during an event called Pride's Purge. This was a time when some members were forced out of Parliament because of political disagreements.

Family Life and Legacy

Sir Robert Napier was married twice. His first wife was Frances Thornhurst. They had one son, also named Robert. Sadly, this son passed away before Sir Robert's father did. Because of this, Sir Robert's grandson, Robert, inherited the Baronet title directly from his great-grandfather.

Sir Robert's second wife was Lady Penelope Egerton. She was the daughter of John Egerton, 1st Earl of Bridgewater. With Lady Penelope, Sir Robert had two more sons and one daughter. He made sure that his property and wealth would go to these two sons. Eventually, his eldest son from this second marriage, John, became the Baronet after the first family line ended.
