Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Roger de Pulesdon (also spelled Pyvelesdon or Puleston) was an English knight from a place called Puleston in Shropshire. His father, who was also named Sir Roger, was honored by his son with a special monument. This monument, known as the Puleston Cross, was built in the town of Newport, which was close to the family's home.

In 1285, Sir Roger de Pulesdon held an important job as the Sheriff of Staffordshire and Salop (an old name for Shropshire). A sheriff was a person chosen by the king to be the main law enforcement officer in a county.

Who Was Sir Roger de Pulesdon?

Sir Roger de Pulesdon was a key figure in English history during the late 13th century. He served King Edward I of England at a time of great change, especially in Wales. His story shows how English rule was established in new territories.

A Royal Appointment in Wales

In 1284, King Edward I conquered the Kingdom of Gwynedd, which was the last independent Welsh kingdom. After the conquest, the king needed loyal men to help govern the area. He chose Sir Roger to be the first High Sheriff of Anglesey. This was a very powerful and important position. As sheriff, Sir Roger was responsible for keeping the peace and enforcing the king's laws on the island of Anglesey.

The Welsh Uprising of 1294

Many Welsh people were unhappy with English rule. In 1294, a rebellion broke out across Wales, led by a man named Madoc ap Llywelyn. This uprising was a major challenge to King Edward's authority.

Because Sir Roger represented the English king, he became a target for the Welsh rebels. In 1295, during a surprise attack on the town of Caernarvon, Welsh fighters captured Sir Roger. He was then executed by the rebels, bringing his time as sheriff to a sudden and violent end.
