Sir Theobald Hubert Burke (born March 25, 1833 – died April 4, 1909) was an Irish soldier. He held the special title of a Baronet, which is like a hereditary knight. Sir Theobald served in the British Army during two major conflicts: the Crimean war and the Indian Mutiny.

Who Was Sir Theobald Burke?

Sir Theobald Hubert Burke was the 13th Baronet in his family line. This means he inherited a special title that had been passed down through his family for generations. He was a respected military officer from Ireland.

Early Life and Family

Theobald Burke was born on March 25, 1833. His birthplace was Waterslade House, located in Tuam, County Galway, Ireland. He was one of six sons born to William Burke. His family, the Burkes of Knocknagur, was an old and well-known family from Glinsk.

A Soldier's Journey

Sir Theobald began his military career at a young age. He joined the British Army as an officer. His first regiment was the 88th Connaught Rangers.

He bravely served in the Crimean war, which took place from 1853 to 1856. After that, he also fought in the Indian Mutiny (also known as the Indian Rebellion of 1857).

In 1866, he moved to a different regiment, the 18th Royal Irish Regiment. During his time in the army, he rose through the ranks. He eventually reached the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Family and Legacy

Sir Theobald inherited his Baronet title in 1884. He received it from Sir John Lionel Burke, 12th Baronet. A Baronetcy is a hereditary title, meaning it passes down within a family.

Sir Theobald passed away in London when he was 76 years old. When he died, his Baronetcy ended because there was no direct heir to pass it on to.

He had two notable brothers:

  • One brother, Thomas Henry Burke, worked in politics. He was a very important official in the Irish Office.
  • Another brother, Augustus Nicholas Burke, was a talented artist.
