Sir Thomas Mackworth, 3rd Baronet facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Thomas Mackworth, 3rd Baronet (born May 1, 1624 – died November 28, 1694) was an important English politician. He held a special title called a "Baronet," which is like a hereditary knight.

Who Was Sir Thomas Mackworth?

Sir Thomas Mackworth was born in 1624. His father was Sir Henry Mackworth, who was also a Baronet. Thomas inherited his father's title in 1640. This meant he became the 3rd Baronet in his family.

A Time of War

Sir Thomas lived during a very turbulent time in England. This was the period of the English Civil War. He was a supporter of the King, known as a "Royalist" or "Cavalier." Because he supported the King, he faced penalties when the King's side lost. In 1648, he had to pay a fine.

Serving His Community

Even after the war, Sir Thomas continued to serve his community. From 1666 to 1667, he held an important local position. He was the High Sheriff of Rutland. This role involved keeping law and order in the county.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In 1679, Sir Thomas Mackworth became a Member of Parliament (MP). This meant he was elected to represent the area of Rutland in the English Parliament. He was re-elected several times, serving in 1680, 1685, and 1689.

Standing Up for Beliefs

As an MP, Sir Thomas was not afraid to speak his mind. He disagreed with King James II's ideas about religion. Because of his strong opinions, he was removed from his local leadership role in Rutland in 1688.

During a big event called the Glorious Revolution, there was a debate about King James II. Sir Thomas did not agree that the King had given up his throne. Because of this, his name was put on a special list by another MP, Anthony Rowe.

However, later on, during the time of King William III and Queen Mary II, Sir Thomas was seen as a "Whig." Whigs were a political group who often supported more power for Parliament.

Later Life

Sir Thomas Mackworth continued his work in Parliament. In 1692, he was given time off because he was not feeling well. Sadly, he passed away in 1694 from a disease called smallpox.
