Sir William Montgomery, 1st Baronet (born November 9, 1717 – died December 25, 1788) was an important politician. He was born in Scotland but spent most of his life and career in Ireland.

Early Life and Family

William Montgomery was born in Scotland. His father was also named William Montgomery, and their family came from a place called Magbie Hill in Ayrshire. His family was connected to a noble family known as the Earls of Eglinton.

Later, William Montgomery moved to Dublin, which is the capital city of Ireland. There, he became very successful working as a contractor. This meant he helped supply the Irish Army with things they needed.

He was married twice. First, he married Hannah Tomkins. They had a son named William, and two daughters. One of his daughters became Anne Townshend, Marchioness Townshend. After Hannah passed away, he married Anne Evatt.

Political Career

In 1768, William Montgomery was chosen to be a member of parliament. This means he was elected to represent people in the Irish House of Commons. This was like a government meeting place in Ireland at the time. He represented the area called Ballynakil.

He continued to serve as a member of parliament for Ballynakil until he passed away in 1788.

Becoming a Baronet

On May 28, 1774, William Montgomery was given a special honor. He was made a baronet. A baronet is a title of honor that is passed down through the family. It's like being a knight, but the title can be inherited. He was known as the 1st Baronet of Magbie Hill.

When Sir William Montgomery passed away in 1788, his title was passed on to his son from his second marriage, George Montgomery. George became the 2nd Baronet.
