The Earl of Eglinton is a special title in the Peerage of Scotland. A "peerage" is a system of titles for important families. This title was first given by James IV of Scotland in 1507. The first person to hold it was Hugh Montgomerie, 3rd Lord Montgomerie.
In 1859, the 13th Earl of Eglinton, Archibald Montgomerie, received another title. He became the Earl of Winton in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. This new title meant he automatically had a seat in the House of Lords. The House of Lords is part of the UK Parliament. Since then, both earldoms have been held by the same person.
Other titles held by the Earl of Eglinton include Lord Montgomerie (created in 1449). Also, Baron Ardrossan (1806) and Baron Seton and Tranent (1859) are part of this family's honors. The Lord Montgomerie title is from Scotland. The Baron titles are from the United Kingdom.
The Earl of Eglinton is also the traditional leader, or Clan Chief, of Clan Montgomery. The family's old home was Eglinton Castle. This castle is located in Kilwinning, North Ayrshire, Scotland.
