Hugh Archibald William Montgomerie, born on July 24, 1966, is an important person in Scotland. He is a Scottish peer, which means he holds a special noble title. He is also a landowner, a businessman, and a Sheriff for the area of Renfrewshire. On top of that, he is the chief of Clan Montgomery, a historic Scottish family.

Before 2018, he was known by the special name of Lord Montgomerie. This was a courtesy title, meaning it was used out of respect because of his father's noble rank.

Born in Hammersmith, Hugh Montgomerie is the oldest of four sons. His parents were Archibald Montgomerie, 18th Earl of Eglinton, and Marion Carolina Dunn-Yarker. He went to Eton College, a well-known school. After school, he joined the Royal Navy and served as an officer from 1988 to 1993. He was a Sub-Lieutenant in the navy. Later, he became a shipping operations manager. In 1994, he joined the Intelligence Corps of the Territorial Army as a Lieutenant. He then moved to the Regular Army Reserve of Officers in 2000.

In the late 1990s, he studied at the University of Edinburgh. He earned a MBA degree in 1999. From 2004 to 2020, he worked as an executive for Dell Technologies, a big technology company, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Becoming an Earl

On June 14, 2018, Hugh Montgomerie became the Earl of Eglinton and the Earl of Winton. He also inherited the titles of Lord Montgomerie and Baron Ardrossan. He received these titles after his father passed away. The title of Earl of Eglinton dates back to 1507, making it very old. The Earl of Winton title was created in 1859.

At the time his father died, the family lived at Balhomie House in Perthshire. However, this house was sold in 2019.

Clan Montgomery Chief

Besides being a Sheriff, Hugh Montgomerie is the chief of Clan Montgomery. A clan chief is the traditional leader of a Scottish clan, like the head of a very old family. The first person with the Montgomerie name in Scotland was Robert of Montgomerie. He was given land called Eaglesham in Renfrewshire during the time of King David I, who ruled from 1124 to 1153.

Robert's father had lived in the Castle of Sainte-Foy-de-Montgommery in Normandy, France. He had come to England with William the Conqueror a long time ago.

Since 2018, the Earl of Eglinton has been a member of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs. This group helps to represent and support Scottish clans. He is also the chairman of the Society of Scottish Armigers.

Family Life

Hugh Montgomerie has been married twice. His first marriage was to Sara Alexandra Redpath on December 19, 1991. They later divorced in 1998.

On July 28, 2001, he married Carol Anne Robinson. They have three children together:

  • Rhuridh Seton Archibald Montgomerie, Lord Montgomerie (born 2007)

In 2020, after leaving Dell, the Earl of Eglinton moved to Moffat in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.
