Hugh Montgomerie, 7th Earl of Eglinton (born May 30, 1613 – died February 1669) was an important Scottish noble and landowner. He held the title of Earl of Eglinton.

Hugh's Early Life

Hugh Montgomerie was the son of Alexander Montgomerie, 6th Earl of Eglinton and Anne Livingstone. He spent much of his younger years at Seton Palace. He lived there with his grandmother, Margaret, Countess of Winton.

In 1628, Hugh and his two younger brothers went to Glasgow University. He later traveled to Paris in 1633 to continue his studies. In November 1634, he visited London. There, he stayed with David Cunningham of Auchenharvie.

Hugh's Public Service

Hugh Montgomerie did not agree with King Charles I's religious policies. He became a colonel, a type of military leader, under General Leslie. He fought in the Battle of Newburn.

In 1640, he tried to capture a place called Tynemouth, but he was not successful. Later, in 1646, he joined a military campaign in the north. This campaign was led by Middleton.

Hugh Montgomerie was defeated in a battle at Aberdeen by Huntly. Because of his involvement in something called "the Engagement," he was not allowed to hold public jobs until 1660.

In 1651, the English army captured him. He was also not included in a special pardon given by Oliver Cromwell in 1654.

Becoming the Earl of Eglinton

Hugh Montgomerie became the Earl of Eglinton in January 1661. This happened after his father passed away. He continued to serve as Earl until his own death in February 1669. He died at Eglinton.

Family Life and Marriages

Hugh Montgomerie married Anne Hamilton in 1631. Sadly, she passed away soon after giving birth to their daughter, Anna Montgomerie. Anne Hamilton's jewels were listed in 1632. These included a special feather decorated with diamonds. This was a gift from her mother, Ann Cunningham.

Their daughter, Anna Montgomerie, later married James Ogilvie, who was the 3rd Earl of Findlater.

In 1635, Hugh married his second wife, Mary Leslie. She was the daughter of John Leslie, 6th Earl of Rothes. Hugh and Mary had several children together:
