The Monardella purpurea is a special kind of flowering plant. People often call it the Siskiyou monardella or serpentine monardella. It belongs to the mint family, just like the mint you might find in your garden!
This plant naturally grows in the mountains. You can find it in northern California and southern Oregon. It loves places like the Klamath Mountains. It often grows in chaparral areas, which are like shrublands, and in forests. It especially likes to grow in serpentine soils, which are a unique type of soil.
What the Siskiyou Monardella Looks Like
This plant is a perennial herb. This means it lives for more than two years. It grows a straight, purple stem. This stem can reach about 40 centimeters tall. That's about the length of a ruler and a half!
Its leaves grow in pairs, one across from the other. They feel a bit tough or leathery. Each leaf is shaped like a wide spearhead. They can be up to 3 centimeters long.
The flowers grow in a cluster called an inflorescence. This cluster looks like a head of several flowers. They bloom inside a cup made of purplish, leathery leaves. These special leaves are called bracts.
The flowers themselves are pinkish-purple. They are just over a centimeter long. They have a narrow, tube-like shape. Each flower has pointed tips, called lobes. You can also see parts sticking out. These are the stamens, which hold the pollen.
