Sisters Island is a tiny island located off the northwest coast of Tasmania, in south-eastern Australia. It's a very small piece of land, only about 1.43 hectares (which is roughly the size of three and a half football fields). The island is near a place called Sisters Beach.
Many local fishermen call it 'Snook Island'. This is because they often find large groups of a fish called Snook swimming close to the island's edge.
Island Features and Wildlife
Most of Sisters Island is covered by a thick layer of plants. One common plant found here is called Coprosma repens. This plant forms a dense cover over the island.
The island is also an important home for many birds. Several types of seabirds and waders (birds that wade in shallow water) come here to breed. These include the cute little penguin, the amazing short-tailed shearwater, the large Pacific gull, and the striking sooty oystercatcher.
A Look at History
Shipwrecks Near the Island
Sisters Island has a bit of history, including a shipwreck. A French ship called L'Enterprise was wrecked on the island. This happened a long time ago, either in 1802 or 1803.
