A Look Back: The Church's Story
How the Church Began
The land for this church and its cemetery was set aside around 1703. This was when the land was officially given for the church to use. The General Six-Principle Baptists were a type of Baptist group. They grew out of the First Baptist Church in America in Providence, Rhode Island.
Roger Williams, who founded Rhode Island, was active in both Providence and nearby North Kingstown (Wickford). This was during the same time period. The church group in North Kingstown likely started after 1664. That's when Reverend Thomas Baker moved there from Newport.
Changes Over Time
The church building had big changes in 1842. It was updated in a style called Greek Revival. This style makes buildings look like ancient Greek temples. Even with these updates, the original parts of the building from the 1700s are still believed to be inside.
The church building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This means it is a very important historical place. As of 2009, the church was still holding weekly Sunday morning services.
