A Look at the Church's History
The land for the church and its cemetery was set aside around 1703. This is when the first building for meetings was likely built. The General Six-Principle Baptists were a type of Baptist group. They grew out of the First Baptist Church in America in Providence, Rhode Island.
Early Beginnings in Rhode Island
Roger Williams, who founded Rhode Island, was active in both Providence and nearby North Kingstown. A church group in North Kingstown probably started after 1664. This was when Reverend Thomas Baker moved there from a church in Newport.
Changes to the Building Over Time
The church building had big changes in 1842. It was updated in a style called Greek Revival. This style makes buildings look like ancient Greek temples. Even with these changes, the original parts of the 18th-century building are still believed to be inside.
Recognized as a Historic Place
The church building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This means it is a special place that is important to history. As of 2009, the church still held services every Sunday morning.
