Siyeh Glacier is a small ice mass found in Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana. This glacier sits in a deep, bowl-shaped valley called a cirque. It is located north of Mount Siyeh. The glacier is high up, between 6,800 and 7,200 feet (about 2,070 to 2,190 meters) above sea level.

Siyeh Glacier is shrinking very quickly. It lost more than 73 percent of its surface area between 1966 and 2005. Today, it covers less than 10 acres (about 0.04 square kilometers). This size is often considered too small for a glacier to be called "active."

What is Siyeh Glacier?

Siyeh Glacier is a type of mountain glacier. It is a large, slow-moving body of ice. Glaciers form when snow piles up over many years. The weight of the new snow presses down on the old snow. This pressure turns the snow into ice.

Where is Siyeh Glacier Located?

You can find Siyeh Glacier in the beautiful Glacier National Park. This park is in Montana, USA. The glacier is nestled in a high mountain area. It sits in a natural hollow, or cirque, on the side of Mount Siyeh.

Why is Siyeh Glacier Shrinking?

Siyeh Glacier has been getting much smaller over time. This is called "retreating." Between 1966 and 2005, it lost a huge amount of its ice. This loss was more than 73 percent of its total size.

What Does "Active Glacier" Mean?

Sometimes, glaciers need to be a certain size to be called "active." An active glacier is one that is still moving and shaping the land. Many scientists say a glacier needs to be at least 25 acres (about 0.1 square kilometers) to be active. Siyeh Glacier is now much smaller than this.
