Skidamarink facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Skidamarink, also known as Skinnamarink, is a very popular children's song. It's often sung in preschools and homes across North America. The song is famous for its fun, made-up words. Even though the words are silly, the song's main message is simple: "I love you!"

The Song's History

This well-known song first appeared a long time ago. It was part of a Broadway show in 1910. The show was called "The Echo." A person named Felix F. Feist wrote the words for the song. Another person, Al Piantadosi, wrote the music. The song's first title was much longer! It was "Skid-dy-mer-rink-adink-aboomp" or "Skiddy-Mer-Rink-A-Doo." Because the words are made up, the spelling of "Skidamarink" has changed over the years.

How It Became Famous

Popularity in Canada

In Canada, a children's music group made the song super popular. This group was called Sharon, Lois & Bram. They first put the song on their album, One Elephant, Deux Éléphants. Later, they sang it on their TV show, The Elephant Show. "Skinnamarink" became their special song. They even named another TV show Skinnamarink TV after it!

Lois Lilienstein, one of the group members, heard the song from a young girl. The girl had just learned it at camp. The band members didn't know who originally wrote the song. So, they listed it as "Traditional" on their album. In Toronto, Canada, there's even an ice rink named "Skinnama-rink." It's located in Davisville Village and honors the famous song.

Popularity in Australia

The popular Australian children's band The Wiggles also released their own version of the song. They shared their take on "Skidamarink" in March 2020.

Skidamarink a dink a dink, skidamarink a doo. I love you!

Skidamarink a dink a dink, skidamarink a doo. I love you!

I love you in the morning, and in the afternoon. I love you in the evening, and underneath the moon.

Oh skidamarink a dink a dink a dink, skidamarink a doo. I love you!
