Skillingaryd is a small town in Vaggeryd Municipality, located in Jönköping County, Sweden. In 2013, it was home to over 13,200 people. Skillingaryd shares the role of being the main town for Vaggeryd Municipality with the nearby town of Vaggeryd.
Skillingaryd has a long history as a place where many factories and businesses operate. It is home to several large companies like Thor Ahlgren AB, Kinnarps, and Presso. The town is also located on the Halmstad Nässjö railway line. This line was once part of the older Halmstad-Nässjö Railways (HNJ). Skillingaryd is also well-known for its military training area, called the Skillingaryd firing range. This area is still used by the military today. You might also hear about the special "Skillingaryd ointment," which is a local product.
Exploring Skillingaryd's Buildings
Skillingaryd is famous for its beautiful old buildings. Many houses have been carefully kept over the years. You can see many open porches with fancy designs on them. The older parts of Skillingaryd also feature lovely iron roofs and old gates. These details show the town's rich history and building styles.
Skillingaryd's Military History
The area known as the Western Camp and its military museum have been used for military training since the 1680s. This means soldiers have been practicing here for hundreds of years! The training area is next to Main Street. Along streets lined with trees, you can find large open fields and the wooden buildings of the Western Camp. This area is still an active place for military activities today.
The Story of Coffee Street
Coffee Street got its name because it was a popular spot for military personnel to take their coffee breaks. Because of this, the street became a busy shopping area for the town. This was especially true from the early 1900s until the 1940s and 1950s. Many of the old, important buildings from that time can still be seen on Coffee Street today.
The main building for the town's government is called Skillingehus. However, some government services are also available in the nearby town of Vaggeryd.
