History of Slaughters

How Slaughters Got Its Name

Local stories say that the city was named after a man named Gustavus Slaughter. In 1855, he supposedly won the chance to name the town and its post office during a card game.

Post Office and Town Name Changes

The first post office opened on January 29, 1856. It was originally called Slaughtersville. Henry A. Prater was the first postmaster, which is the person in charge of the post office. Gustavus Slaughter himself served as postmaster from 1860 to 1865.

The post office's name was changed to Slaughters in 1915. However, the town itself kept the name Slaughtersville for much longer. It was officially incorporated, or made a city, in 1861. It wasn't until 1967 that the Board on Geographic Names changed the town's official name to Slaughters. This change made the town's name match what most people already called it and the name of its post office.
