History and Culture of Sloquet Hot Springs
The hot springs are in a beautiful forest area. This land has always belonged to the Xa'xtsa people. They are also known as the Douglas First Nation.
The Xa'xtsa people have used these hot springs for a very long time. They used them even before European and Canadian settlers arrived. Today, the Xa'xtsa people still use the hot springs for their traditional ceremonies. It is a very important cultural site for them.
Exploring the Hot Pools
The water at Sloquet Hot Springs comes out of the ground very hot. It is about 64 degrees Celsius (147 degrees Fahrenheit). This super hot water flows from a steep bank into two small pools.
- Upper Pools: The water in these first two pools and the small waterfall can be too hot for swimming.
- Testing the Water: Always test the water temperature before you get in. You can use a container to dip into the water first.
- Cooler Water Layer: Sometimes, a layer of cooler water floats on top of the hot spring water. This is called "supernatant liquid."
Further down the creek, you will find a larger pool. This pool is usually a more comfortable temperature for soaking.
Hot and Cold Dips
Next to the hot springs is a river fed by a glacier. This river has very cold water. You can try a "Roman" or "Turkish" style bath here. This means you can switch between the hot spring pools and the cold river. It's a refreshing experience!
Camping and Services
Camping is available at the Sloquet Hot Springs site. However, there are not many services available. This means you should be prepared and bring what you need for your visit.
