Story of Slugterra
The main character, Eli Shane, wants to become the best "Slugslinger" ever. A Slugslinger is someone who uses small creatures called Slugs in battles. To fight evil, Eli must find, train, and duel with these Slugs in the secret underground world of Slugterra.
Eli and his friends explore many caverns. They challenge rivals and each other to friendly duels. They also upgrade their gear to be ready for anything. However, a big threat exists: the evil scientist Dr. Blakk. He wants to turn the helpful Slugs into dangerous, mindless weapons.
Meet the Slugs
Slugs are small, shell-less creatures that live all over Slugterra. They are very important to the world and to Slugslingers.
Slug Powers and Elements
Each Slug has a special power linked to an element. There are five basic elements: Fire, Water, Air, Earth, and Energy. Other elements include Electric, Toxic, Ice, Plant, Shadow, and Psychic.
There are also five special "Elemental Slugs." These were the very first Slugs of their kind. If an Elemental Slug becomes corrupted, all other Slugs of its type will also be affected. For example, if the Air Elemental Slug turns bad, all other Air Slugs, like Hoverbug or Gazzer, will become bad too.
How Slugs Transform
When a Slugslinger fires a Slug from a special device called a Blaster, the Slug moves very fast. It can reach speeds of 100 miles per hour! At this speed, the Slug changes into a stronger form called a "Velocimorph." In this form, it can use a powerful special ability unique to its species.
After being fired, Slugs can be used again if their Slingslinger quickly picks them up. If not, friendly Slugs will return to their Slingslinger's hideout on their own. After their attack, they change back to their normal "Protoform." Slugs are kept in special cylinder-shaped cases called slug shells.
Mega Morph Slugs
Very experienced Slugs can transform into an even stronger form called a "Mega Morph." This happens when they are shot at 200 miles per hour! If a Slug isn't experienced enough, it might not be able to handle the speed, and the Mega Morph will fail.
When a Slug first becomes a Mega Morph, its normal appearance changes forever. Slingslingers can use a special device called an "accelerator" on their Blaster to help a Slug Mega Morph more easily.
Ghoul Slugs
Dark Energy is very harmful to Slugs. Being near it can make them sick and stop them from transforming. Slugs can become "Ghouled," which means they are corrupted by Dark Energy. This can happen if they breathe Dark Energy gas or fall into Dark Water.
Ghoul Slugs are usually more powerful than regular Slugs. However, well-trained regular Slugs can still defeat them. It's also harder for Slingslingers to bond with Ghoul Slugs, and they are less likely to return after being fired. A Ghoul Slug can be cured by a special "Boon Doc" Slug or by being close to a place called the Light Well.
Main Characters
- Will Shane: Eli Shane's father and the protector of Slugterra.
- Eli Shane: Will Shane's son and the leader of the Shane Gang.
- Kord: An engineer who specializes in Mecha-Beasts and a member of the Shane Gang.
- Pronto: A Molonoid and a skilled tracker, also a member of the Shane Gang.
- Trixie: A vlogger (video blogger) and a member of the Shane Gang.
- Junjie: The champion of the Eastern Caverns and a member of the Shane Gang.
- Dr. Blakk: The main villain and owner of Blakk Industries.
Blasters and Fusion Shots
Blasters are essential tools for Slugslingers. They are used to shoot Slugs with enough force to make them transform and attack. Blasters can be changed with accessories to improve how they work. However, most Slugslingers prefer to let their Slugs do most of the work.
Blasters can be damaged or destroyed by Slug attacks or if they are modified incorrectly. Even without a Blaster, Slugs can still be launched using old methods like catapults or slingshots.
Fusion Shots: Powerful Combos
A "Fusion Shot" happens when two Slugs with similar energy combine their attacks. These combined attacks are much stronger than a single Slug shot.
- Shadowray: Combines an "Albino Boon Doc" and a "Negashade." It creates a powerful sonic beam.
- NovaBolt: Uses an "Infurnus" and a "Tazerling." It forms a fiery plasma blast.
- Magma Blade: Combines a "Thresher" and a "Forgesmelter." It creates a super-hot spinning sawblade that can melt metal.
- Boulder Storm: A "Rammstone" launches a "Tormato." The Tormato then creates a cyclone filled with boulders. This can be risky up close.
- Nitro Bubble: An "Infurnus" and a "Bubbaleone" form a flaming bubble. This can be used for quick escapes, acting like a fast hot air balloon.
- Inferno Slam: An "Infurnus" and a "Rammstone" spin together. The Rammstone gets blazing horns for a powerful impact.
- ElectroSpear: A "Tazerling" and a "Dirt Urchin" spin to shoot electrified needles.
- Supernova: An "Infurnus" and a "Phosphoro" spin, with the Phosphoro lighting up and the Infurnus boosting the light.
- Magma Strike: An "Infurnus" and an "Armashelt" launch a huge flaming boulder. This can temporarily stop Dr. Blakk's large tanks.
- Rock Armour: A "Rammstone" and a "Hop Rock" combine. The Rammstone grows and gets covered in Hop Rock armor.
- SawBolo: A "Polero" and a "Thresher" become two spinning threshers joined together.
- SuperCure: A "Boon Doc" and a "Fandango" spin to create an orb of pure Slug Energy. This can heal corrupted Slugs.
- RockBomb: A "Rammstone" and a "Grenuke" spin and create a large crater when they hit the ground.
Defective Combinations
Sometimes, Slug combinations don't work as planned.
- Inferno Splash: An "Infurnus" and an "AquaBeek" create a splashing pulse wave. This tires out normal Slugs but doesn't affect Ghouls.
Mecha-Beasts: Robotic Rides
Mecha-Beasts are robotic creatures used for transportation in Slugterra. They run on Slug energy. These beasts come in many shapes and sizes, often looking like bulls, horses, moles, or elephants. Some are custom-made, like snake-shaped ones.
Building Mecha-Beasts
Most Mecha-Beasts are built at the Mecha-Beast Forge. They are powered by special "hearts" filled with Slug energy. The abilities of a Mecha-Beast can vary. They can also be upgraded with different parts, just like Blasters, to fit various situations.
Ghouling Mecha-Beasts
Since Mecha-Beasts use Slug energy, they can also become "Ghouled." This happens if Dark Water touches their energy cores. A Ghouled Mecha-Beast will act strangely, and its eyes will glow red. Eventually, it will stop obeying its rider, turn against them, and then explode. Luckily, healing Slugs can cure a Ghouled Mecha-Beast.
Upgrading Mecha-Beasts
Mecha-Beasts can be greatly improved. Adding rocket boosters makes them faster and helps them jump over large gaps. This can also help riders catch fast Slugs. Another upgrade lets them act as a Jet Ski, allowing them to cruise across water.
A "Glider Mode" upgrade adds wings, useful for a safe, slow descent from high places. The most advanced upgrade allows a Mecha-Beast to transform into a "Vehicle Mode." In this mode, it can go over 100 miles per hour! This extreme speed can even help an experienced Slug Mega Morph more easily if the Blaster doesn't have an accelerator.
Episodes and Slugisodes
The Slugterra TV series has many episodes. There are also shorter animated videos called "Slugisodes." From 2012 to 2016, 80 Slugisodes were released. More new ones were planned for 2020.
These "Slugisodes" are short, 2D animated videos. They usually don't have dialogue and focus on the Slugs themselves. They feature Slugs from the main show and introduce new Slugs and locations. A new Slugisode, "Joules VS. Blusgeon battle," was released on September 12, 2020, after a four-year break.
