Boltonia diffusa, also known as the smallhead doll's daisy, is a type of plant found in North America. It belongs to the sunflower family, which includes many well-known flowers like sunflowers and daisies. This plant grows naturally in the United States. You can mostly find it in states along the Gulf of Mexico, from Texas all the way to Florida. It also grows in the lower Mississippi Valley, from Louisiana up to Illinois. Some populations are found further east, as far north as Virginia.

What is the Smallhead Doll's Daisy?

The smallhead doll's daisy is a small plant that usually grows to be less than 20 centimeters (about 8 inches) tall. It's a perennial, meaning it lives for more than two years and often comes back each spring. This plant spreads by using special stems called stolons. These are like horizontal runners that grow along the ground, helping the plant to spread out and create new plants.

How Does It Look?

The smallhead doll's daisy has many flowers that look a lot like small daisies. Each "flower" is actually a group of tiny flowers called a flower head. These flower heads have two main parts:

  • Ray florets: These are the petal-like parts around the outside. On the smallhead doll's daisy, they can be white or a light purple color (lavender).
  • Disc florets: These are the tiny yellow flowers packed together in the center of the flower head.
