On September 2, 2013, an amazing event happened at Smathers Beach. A brave long-distance swimmer named Diana Nyad arrived there. She had swum 110 miles (166 kilometers) all the way from Havana, Cuba. This was a huge achievement! It was the first time anyone had ever swum from Cuba to Florida without a special shark cage for protection. Her journey showed incredible strength and determination.
Who Was George Smathers?
Smathers Beach is named after George Smathers. He was an important person in Florida's history. From 1913 to 2007, he served as a U.S. Senator for Florida.
