Smilja Avramov (Serbian Cyrillic: Смиља Аврамов; February 15, 1918 – October 2, 2018) was a well-known Serbian academic and legal expert. She was also a social activist and a teacher of international law. She was a member of the Senate of Republika Srpska from 1996 to 2009. Before she retired, she was a Professor of International law at the Law Faculty at Belgrade University.

Smilja Avramov's Education and Career
Smilja Avramov finished high school in Sušak, Rijeka, which was part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia at the time, in 1936. Sadly, during World War II in Yugoslavia, some members of her family were killed.
She graduated from the Zagreb Law Faculty in 1947. She earned her master's degree in London and her PhD in Belgrade in 1950. She also studied at other famous universities like Vienna, Harvard, and Columbia.
From 1949 until she retired, Avramov worked at the Belgrade Faculty of Law. There, she was an assistant and later a professor. She also led the Department for International Law and Relationships and directed the Institute for International Law. These roles included being part of the Judicial Council of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Yugoslavia. Avramov was very active in many law groups, including the one in Belgrade. She was the president of the Yugoslav International Law Association and, starting in 1980, the president of the International Law Association.
As a respected scholar, Avramov was chosen to be a member of the first group of the Senate of Republika Srpska. She served in this role from 1996 to 2009. Avramov was also part of a committee that worked on how international law is formed. She was also the president of the International Confederation for Disarmament and Peace. From 1999, Avramov was a member of the leadership of the "Women authors – Conscience of Serbia" movement.
Smilja Avramov's Public Work
Smilja Avramov often spoke out against the idea of "humanitarian intervention," which is when other countries get involved in a country's problems. She believed that the biggest danger to the world was not nationalism or communism, but a lack of respect for laws.
She also served as an advisor to Slobodan Milošević between 1991 and 1992. She later appeared as a witness to help his defense during his trial in 2004. She helped start a group called the Committee for the Protection of Serbs. She was also a member of the International Committee for the Truth of Radovan Karadžić, and she helped with his defense.
In 2013, Avramov disagreed when the Government of Serbia signed the Brussels Agreement with the Government of Kosovo. She believed that this agreement went against the Constitution of Serbia and the Charter of the United Nations.
Smilja Avramov's Passing
Smilja Avramov passed away in Belgrade on October 2, 2018, at the age of 100.
