The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Yugoslavia was like the country's main diplomat. It was a government department in charge of how Yugoslavia talked and worked with other countries around the world. This ministry existed for a long time, from 1918 until 2006, though Yugoslavia itself changed over the years.

The people who worked here helped build friendships, solve problems, and represent Yugoslavia's interests on the global stage. They handled everything from signing important agreements to helping Yugoslav citizens abroad.

What is a Ministry of Foreign Affairs?

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a special part of a country's government. Its main job is to manage the country's relationships with other nations. Think of it as the team that helps a country be a good neighbor and a strong player in the world.

What did they do?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had several important tasks. They would:

  • Talk with leaders and diplomats from other countries.
  • Negotiate treaties and agreements.
  • Help protect the interests of their country's citizens living or traveling abroad.
  • Represent their country in international organizations like the United Nations.
  • Gather information about what was happening in other parts of the world.

History of the Ministry

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs changed as Yugoslavia itself changed. It served different forms of the country over many decades.

Kingdom of Yugoslavia (1918–1941)

The ministry first started on December 7, 1918, when the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was formed. Its job was to help the new kingdom establish itself in the world. The very first Minister of Foreign Affairs was Ante Trumbić. He played a key role in setting up Yugoslavia's early foreign relations. During this time, the ministry worked to build alliances and secure the country's borders.

Yugoslav Government-in-Exile (1941–1945)

During World War II, when Yugoslavia was invaded, a special government was formed outside the country. This was called the Yugoslav government-in-exile. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continued its work from abroad. They tried to keep Yugoslavia's voice heard among the Allied powers. This was a very challenging time for diplomacy.

National Committee for the Liberation of Yugoslavia (1943–1945)

At the same time, inside Yugoslavia, another group was fighting for freedom. This was the National Committee for the Liberation of Yugoslavia. They also had a person in charge of foreign affairs, called the Commissioner for Foreign Affairs. This shows how important international relations were, even during wartime.

Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1945–1992)

After World War II, Yugoslavia became a socialist country. It was known as the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFR Yugoslavia). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continued its important work. During this period, Yugoslavia became a leader in the Non-Aligned Movement. This movement included countries that did not want to take sides with either the USA or the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Ministers like Koča Popović and Josip Broz Tito (who was also the country's leader) were very important in shaping Yugoslavia's unique foreign policy. They worked to promote peace and cooperation among nations.

FR Yugoslavia / Serbia and Montenegro (1992–2006)

In the early 1990s, Yugoslavia began to break apart. Several republics became independent countries. The remaining parts, Serbia and Montenegro, formed a new country called the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FR Yugoslavia). Later, this country changed its name to Serbia and Montenegro. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continued to represent this smaller union. The last Minister of Foreign Affairs for this union was Vuk Drašković. In 2006, Montenegro became an independent country, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Yugoslavia officially ended its work.
