Smithboro is a small village located in Bond County, Illinois, in the United States. In 2020, about 154 people lived there. It's a quiet place with a history that goes back to the late 1800s.
History of Smithboro
Smithboro wasn't always called Smithboro! It used to be known as "Henderson Station." The village got its current name from Henry H. Smith, who was the postmaster there. For a while, the name was even spelled "Smithborough" until 1893. The village officially became a village in 1889.
Something big happened in Smithboro on December 27, 1981. A train went off its tracks, and because of this, about 200 people living in Smithboro and nearby had to leave their homes for a day to stay safe. Some of the train cars were carrying chemicals. Luckily, residents were able to return home the very next day after the area was cleaned up and train tracks were fixed.
