Discovering Smithtown's History
Smithtown was officially started in 1925. It got its name from three brothers named Smith. These brothers owned and ran a small factory that made furniture and cabinets in the area.
For many years, Smithtown was an important stop on a main road. This road connected the city of Winston (now part of Winston-Salem) to the town of Boonville. Today, the community is mainly found along Smithtown Road.
The Old Post Office
Before 1909, Smithtown had a post office called Poindexter. It was named after early settlers, C.W. Poindexter and S.A. Poindexter. C.W. Poindexter was also the postmaster, which is the person in charge of the post office.
Churches and Community Life
Smithtown is home to several historic houses. It also has two Methodist churches that are very close to each other, less than a mile apart.
- Prospect United Methodist Church: This church was first started in 1830.
- New Home United Methodist Church: This church's first building was constructed in 1885.
Interestingly, from 1867 to 1885, both churches shared the same building! Even though they shared a building, they had different pastors. Prospect Church was part of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and New Home Church belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church.
