Smooth Mesquite: A Desert Survivor

The smooth mesquite tree is a tough plant that can grow in many different places. It's known for being able to survive in dry areas.

Where Does It Grow?

In Mexico, you can find smooth mesquite trees in the central highlands, which are high-up areas. They also grow in the lower lands of southern Tamaulipas. You can spot them in parts of Oaxaca, Morelos, Puebla, and Chiapas too.

These trees are not picky about where they live. They can grow on the sides of hills, in low areas that collect water (called depressions), and along floodplains. Floodplains are flat areas next to rivers that sometimes get flooded. This shows how adaptable the smooth mesquite is to different environments.
