The Snead Mound is an ancient earth mound built by Native American people long ago. It is located in the southwestern part of Ohio, a state in the United States. You can find it off U.S. Route 52 near a small town called Neville.

This mound sits on top of a high piece of land, like a small hill, surrounded by trees. It looks like a cone, about 5 feet (1.5 m) (1.5 meters) tall and 55 feet (17 m) (16.8 meters) wide at its bottom. The mound seems to be mostly untouched since settlers arrived in the area, except for a small hole that might have been dug by a hunter.

What is the Snead Mound?

An Ancient Burial Site

The Snead Mound is thought to be a burial mound. This means it was built to bury people. It is a very important archaeological site. An archaeological site is a place where scientists study human history by digging up old objects and structures.

Because the Snead Mound has never been fully dug up by archaeologists, it likely still holds clues about the people who built it and what they left behind. This makes it very special for learning about ancient cultures.

Who Built the Mound?

Scientists believe the Adena culture built the Snead Mound. The Adena were a group of Native American people who lived in this area thousands of years ago. They were known for building many mounds.

We think the Adena built this mound because of where it is located. It sits on a bluff, away from where other ancient villages were. This was a common practice for the Adena when they built burial mounds. However, since the mound has not been fully explored, we cannot be absolutely sure.

Why is it Important?

A Protected Historical Site

The Snead Mound is very important because it is an almost untouched example of an ancient burial mound. It can teach us a lot about the Adena culture and how they lived.

Because of its value, the Snead Mound was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This is a list of places in the United States that are important for history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, or culture. Being on this list helps protect the mound so it can be studied and preserved for future generations.
