Snipe Dales is a special place in Lincolnshire, England. It's both a country park and a nature reserve. You can find it near Hagworthingham in the beautiful Lincolnshire Wolds. This area is one of the few places left that shows what the Wolds used to look like long ago.
What is Snipe Dales?
Snipe Dales has two main parts. On the west side, there's a raised heathland which is a nature reserve. A heathland is an open area with small shrubs and grasses. On the east side, you'll find a country park with mostly pine trees.
This whole area is in a valley with steep sides. Many small streams flow through the valley, starting from natural springs. These streams join together to form a larger stream. This larger stream then becomes a part of the River Lymn.
Exploring Snipe Dales
The country park covers about 210 acres (or 0.85 square kilometers). About 90 acres of this is woodland. This woodland used to belong to the Forestry Commission but is now owned by Lincolnshire County Council.
Both the County Council and the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust work together to look after Snipe Dales. They get help from many volunteers and two full-time wardens. You can explore the park and reserve on foot or by wheelchair. There is a car park with visitor facilities available. If you bring a dog, they are welcome in the country park but not in the nature reserve area.
The Prime Meridian at Snipe Dales
Did you know that the Prime Meridian runs right through Snipe Dales? The Prime Meridian is an imaginary line that divides the Earth into Eastern and Western Hemispheres. It's like the starting point for measuring longitude around the world.
There is a special plaque at Snipe Dales where this important line crosses the land. It's a cool spot to visit and stand on the line that separates east from west!
