Graves on St Columba's Isle

Snizort Cathedral, also known as the Church of St Columba, was once a small but important church. It was located on a tiny island called St Columba's Isle (Eilean Chaluim Chille in Gaelic). This island is in the River Snizort, close to where the river meets Loch Snizort. You can find this historic spot on the beautiful Scottish island of Skye.

The church was sometimes called Skeabost. It was founded under the authority of the Archbishop of Nidaros, who was a very important church leader in Norway. One of its most famous bishops was a man named Wimund. He became a powerful leader who traveled the seas after the year 1147.

The Story of Snizort Cathedral

How the Church Began

People say that Snizort Cathedral was built near a special rock. This rock is where a famous saint, Columba, once preached. That's why the island is named St Columba's Isle!

The area might have been a sacred place for the ancient Pictish people long before. The Picts were an old group who lived in Scotland. But by the time Saint Columba arrived, it might have already become a Christian place for the Picts.

Growing in Importance

Over many centuries, Snizort Cathedral became more and more important. Another nearby monastery, Kilmuir, became less significant. By the 1300s, Snizort Cathedral was known as the "Metropolitan Church of the Isles." This meant it was the main church for the Bishop of the Isles.

It held this important role until its power moved to Iona Abbey. The cathedral was still in use until at least the year 1501.

What Happened to the Cathedral?

Sadly, Snizort Cathedral was destroyed during the Scottish Reformation. This was a big change in Scotland when many churches changed from one type of Christianity to another. Even though it was destroyed, you can still see parts of the old church today. These ruins remind us of its long and interesting history.
