Graves on St Columba's Isle

Snizort Cathedral (pronounced SNEE-zort) was a small but important church located on an island in the River Snizort. This island, called St Columba's Isle (or Eilean Chaluim Chille in Gaelic), is found near the top of Loch Snizort on the Scottish island of Skye. It was also known as the Church of St Columba or Skeabost.

This cathedral was first set up under the authority of the Archbishop of Nidaros in Norway. One of its most famous leaders was a bishop named Wimund. According to old stories, after the year 1147, he became a brave adventurer who traveled by sea.

The Story of Snizort Cathedral

Early Beginnings and Legends

People believe that Snizort Cathedral was built near a special rock where Columba, a very important saint, once preached. This rock became known as St. Columba's Rock. The area might have first been a place of worship for the ancient Pictish people, who had different beliefs. However, by the time Saint Columba arrived, it might have already become a Christian place for the Picts.

Growing Importance Over Time

As the centuries passed, Snizort Cathedral became more and more important. Another religious center, the Kilmuir monastery, slowly became less significant. By the 14th century, Snizort Cathedral was called the "Metropolitan Church of the Isles." This meant it was the main church for the Bishops of the Isles. It held this important position until its power moved to Iona Abbey.

The End of the Cathedral

Snizort Cathedral was still in use until at least the year 1501. However, it was later destroyed during a period known as the Scottish reformation. This was a time when many changes happened in the church in Scotland. Even though the cathedral was destroyed, you can still see its remains today on St Columba's Isle. These ruins help us remember its long history.
